More like $2.48/peak watt, but that was a clearance sale price. Anyway,
Northern Hydraulics is a chain of stores. The one where I saw the
panel is on Buford Highway in Norcross Ga. They have a catalog and
mail order number, but I don't have that here.

   Hi Gary,
                It was very pleasant to come across someone asking the
right sorts of questions, and in a way that suggested an open-minded

     I meant that bit about British prices. Can we institute an
equivalent of the US-UK food parcel programme of the second world war
era, and have US amateurs sending parcels of redundant IC765's, FT 736,
8877's etc to needy British amateurs ?  I can post a list of

I received numerious ammounts of e-mail from persons
wanting more information about the Hamblaster.
I thought it would better for me to post it.

As a Ham radio operator and developer of the
Hamblaster (TM), Windows software I was impressed when
my first Windows application came to life.  The Auto
Tune and O-Scope control panels worked so well that I
spent hours just tuning around, listening Morse code
and copying RTTY and H.F. packet.  The product is still
under development but it will debut at a few Hamfests in
the Chicago area.  Willco hopefully will be at the 94 Dayton
Hamvention.

The Hamblaster is a sound board that plugs into a PC 8 bit
expansion bus.  Unlike conventional sound boards, it has a
Texas Instruments TMS320C25 digital signal processor chip and
high speed memory.  It's not Soundblaster compatible .  But

Most fo these mods are very simple. One solder point or diode but physically
they can be very difficult. The boards are small and hard to get to and the
people are ripping you off. I woudl buy only a radio that can be reset from
the keyboard if you are interested in this and don't want to pay. Yaesu is
very mnisleading in ads. They say they can cover aircraft but don't say you
have to pay a rip off artist 100 + at a ham show or radio store to get themn
to do it. I did mine and I was shaking all of the time. It is TINY.

So long as you have a decent network stack and a program that uses it
properly you don't need to do anything. I ran Aber4, Aber5 and a couple
of other oddments off my Linux box for a laugh at odd times. I'm currently
playing with WWW by radio instead.
With a decent OS and software you don't need to make any changes

 This could have possibilities.. On an unused frequency, you could put
the TNCs in kiss mode and have the software run all the packet.. The only
thing you will have to look out for is the slow down when you get a lot
of people on there..

You should look for F5JOE. All callsigns FC1XXX are now F1??? while
FD1??? and FE1??? are F5???. For all FE3??, FE5??, FE8?? and FE9??,
just remove the letter E.

I am note 100% sure about that, could anyone confirm ?

the following DX information.

3Y9YBA, ANTARCTICA. Aage, LA9YBA, has been active on from Zone 13.
Operating from Tierro Mountains at Bluefield camp, he has been heard
on 10102 kHz at 0100z or 14250 kHz at 0245z. QSL via LA9YBA.

4J1FS QSL CARDS. Jari, OH2BU, is trying to clear up some confusion
regarding the right route to QSL to past operations of 4J1FS. Jari states
many requests for 4J1FS cards for the 1991 and 1992 operations are being
sent to OH5NZ. This route is wrong and should only be used for the 1989
4J1FS operation. Cards for the 1991 and 1992 operations should only be
sent to OH2BU. Most of the cards which are being sent wrong are coming
from the U.S., and Jari feels there must be a commonly used manger database
that is providing the wrong information.

D2, ANGOLA. Kim, OZ1EYE, should now be active as D2EYE. Activity will
be on 30, 40, 80 and 160 meters, both CW and SSB. Kim's length of stay
is unknown at this time. QSL via OZ1ACB. Antonio, D2EGH has been quite
active daily between 2000 and 2300z on 20 meters (around 14201 kHz
+/- 5 kHz). Also, C91AI is usually on the frequency with him. D2EGH has
also been heard on the 21355 DX net around 1800z. QSL via CT1EGH.

J6, ST. LUCIA. Holger, DL5XAT, and Ralf, DL9XAT, will be active March
5-17. They are trying to apply for J6 calls, but for now it looks like
they will be using J6/DL5XAT and J6/DL9XAT. Activity will be on 160-6
meter on CW an SSB. QSL to CBA or P.O. Box 1411, D-21454 Reinbek, Germany.

JD, OGASAWARA. JD1BIE, should have left Minami Torishima by now and
will become active on Ogasawara. His length of stay is unknown at this
time. He likes to frequent the 14226 DX Net and he has also been heard
on the 7062 DX Net (between 1030-1200z) which is run by VK stations.

NEW "MIR" CREW. The Russian station "MIR" has a new crew aboard. The
crew is: Commander Viktor Afanasiev (U9MIR), Flight Engineer Yuri Usachev
(R3MIR) and Medical Doctor Valerij Polyakov (U3MIR). Other "MIR"
callsigns used on Packet, R0MIR and their Packet Mail System for "MIR"
is R0MIR-1. Listen to 145.55 MHz for passes of "MIR". The new QSL Manager
for the cosmonauts is RV3DR, Serge Samburov, P.O. Box 73, Kaliningrad-10
City, Moscow Area, 141070, Russia.

PY0, ST. PETER & ST. PAUL'S ROCKS (UPDATE). According to Luke, PT7WA,
another delay has happened. No reason why, but now the DXpedition will
take place the February 1st.

ST, SUDAN (MORE ON ST0K). According to G4OJW, the only legal licensed
station operating in the Sudan is ST0K in Khartoum. However, it is
expected that further licenses for individual stations will be
forthcoming. G4OJW is presently the main operator of ST0K and is awaiting
his own personal callsign. The Sudan Amateur Radio Association (SARA) is
being established and will be able to deliver QSLs received to all active
licensed stations in the Sudan. The address for SARA is: Khartoum Airport,
Box 73, Khartoum, Sudan. SARA is not a QSL Bureau, but should be a faster
and more reliable route if the following rules are observed: 1) A separate
SAE should be sent for each Sudanese amateur to respond. 2) sufficient
return postage is required (2 IRCs or 1 U.S. greenstamp). For QSLs received
with unsufficient return postage/envelope costs, they will be answered via
the bureau at irregular intervals. The previous announced addresses for
ST2/G4OJW (Box 4016) and ST0K (Box 617) are still valid, but less reliable
and slow.

TL, CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC. TL8NG was quite active this past weekend.
He was heard on 3789 kHz (net) at 2135z, 24935 kHz at 1700z (for a few
minutes), 18114 kHz at 1709z and on 10107 kHz at 1945z. Also check 21335
kHz at 1445z or as late as 1745z.

UX0, UKRAINE (NEW PREFIX). Nickoals, UX0FF, says he will be calling CQ
nightly from 0300 to 0600z on 3650 kHz. He will concentrate on listening
up for stateside. QSL to DF8BK.

VP8, FALKLAND ISLANDS (PETER I UPDATE). With just two weeks away from
their Peter I DXpedition, the first of the 3Y Teams has arrived and is now
active as VP8BZL for a brief period. During their brief stay, part of the
team will help Mario, VP8ALJ, in setting up a E.M.E. station (which will
be left on the island). They hope that during their stay in Port Stanley
the first ever Earth-Moon-Earth QSO can be made. The second part of the
3Y team will arrive January 18th. They will then begin their major task
of loading food and hand carrying equipment aboard the Russian icebreaker,
"Kapitain Khebnikov". The depart from the Falklands will be on January
23rd and the trip to Peter I will take about a week. They plan to arrive
at this remote glacier covered island by February 1st. The team will use
helicopters to land and unload their equipment. The 9 man team will
spend the next 16 days conducting scientific work and trying to remove
Peter I from the most wanted list by amateurs world wide. The group will
be picked up by the Russian icebreaker, "Akademik Fedorov", again using
helicopters to retrieve the team and equipment. The vessel will than head
northeast towards Cape Town, RSA.

XT, BURKINA FASO. Peter, XT2BW, continues to be active on the WARC bands,
but will be leaving at the end of January in 1994 to spend 2-3 months on
vacation with his family in Ghana. Check 12 and 17 meters between 1600
and 1930z. He has also been heard on 3530 kHz around 2200z. Peter will
try to apply for a licence in 9G-land and will be active when time
permits. QSL via WB2YQH.

ZF, CAYMAN ISLANDS. Bruce, K0BJ, will be active from January 23-29, as
ZF2NJ. Activity will be mainly on 15 and 20 meter CW. He plans to be
especially eager to make QSOs on RS-12. QSL to K0BJ, Box DX, Colby, KS
67701.

ZL, NEW ZEALAND. There has been a report that Jacky, F2CW, is now active
as ZL1WW. He is operating from Ron ZL1AMO's QTH. Jacky was heard on 7005
kHz at 0518z, Sunday, January 16th.

I wrote a letter to John Ramsey, owner of Ramsey Electronics, and sent
him copies of what people have said about Ramsey stuff on Internet. Here's
a quote from his response:

"Tell those guys that I'll be glad to talk to any of them personally -
just call and ask for me (and no, I won't rip 'em). I would like to
show them that we do take our customers and hams seriously and respectfully.
We are available and ready and willing to help!"

I didn't ask for it, but he sent me a free 3-pole filter PCB to cure the
intermod problem. It's available to any FX owner and has three variable caps.

The second harmonic was down -58db instead of the specified -60db but a
couple of caps cure the problem. John pointed out that an HF KW is allowed
to emit more power in the second harmonic than the FX fundamental power.

I have previously posted my improvements for the transmit audio and squelch.

Ramsey is an American manufacturer without the resources of an ICOM. The FX
transceivers perform well once the few bugs are fixed and I, personally, have
had no bad experiences with Ramsey outside of a few missing parts which they
promptly supplied without charge. My eyesight is so bad and those parts so
small that I couldn't even swear they were missing... they might still be
in my carpet.

How 'bout we stop bashing Ramsey and help them solve whatever problems we
might have because of them? If you can improve on their products without
appreciably increasing the cost, send them your improvements. They have
including some of my previous suggestions.

Has anyone actually used electric fence wire for a transmitting antenna?
I used about 110 feet as the top part of a inverted L for 160 meters once
and the SWR varied greatly depending on the amount of power output (50 watts
to 500 watts). Did I have a problem with the antenna or is this normal
for fence wire? BTW I was using #17 fence wire.

#17 electric fence wire is available here in 1/4 mile spools for about
$8. I currently use it for all six of my beverages. Several of the
beverages use supports that are about 150 feet apart. I pull the wire
fairly tight with a turnbuckle at one end. So far the wire has held up
fine for two years.

The current prototypes  are full size PC,XT/AT compatible PC
boards using 16k bytes of  static RAM.  A new design will be
on a 3/4 size (Tandy compatible) and will include 64k bytes
of memory.  To improve reliability and compatability we are
also adding I/O wait state circuitry

You can load a packet or RTTY filter, perform diagnostics,
display a digital oscilloscope or FFT, tune the filters using an
FFT, change the filter parameters and improve reception.  The
Hamblaster will include a Windows for DOS software package
(minimum requirement: XT with 640k of memory and CGA graphics).
Most of the features, that are available in the Windows version,
will run on the DOS version.

The Hamblaster  can interface to any packet modem and allow you to
load improved filters for RTTY, AMTOR, PACTOR, Packet Radio or CW.
Other filters will improve SSB and AM reception, copy Morse code,
display FFT's, decode DTMF and PL tones.

The Hamblaster can also be used as a DSP software development system.
The projected cost for the complete package will around $350.00 including
the DOS software.
